As he runs to keep up, all he can think of is the nursery rhyme Momma always told them:

Soon enough, the twins find themselves on the path upriver, following Primo's lead alongside Maria Beppina, and Sergio. Well, sort of Sergio.

“Don’t you guys think it’s time we should turn back?” Sergio says again. They have been walking along the river for nearly an hour. “We’ve been walking for at least two hours already, and we haven’t seen anything!”

Maria Beppina would probably like to turn around and go home as much as Sergio, and so would Emilio. But since Emilio is the only one who’s ever been to the Bridge of Ancient Ages, Primo and Rosa won’t let him.

Even so, Emilio has only been this far from home in the daytime, and only to hunt mushrooms. Speaking of which, there’s a good one!

Emilio reaches down and plucks a big, juicy elephant’s toe mushroom. It must be worth two quattrini, maybe three! He puts it in one of his pockets.

“Hey, donkey-brains, hurry up!” Rosa calls back. Doesn’t her brother know something more important than fungus is going on here?

“How will we know which tree is the witch tree?” Maria Beppina asks.
